Sandanski, Bulgaria is the birthplace of the leader of the Roman slave uprising in 73-71BC, Spartacus, who led an army of escaped Roman slaves that defeated several Roman legions and came close to sacking Rome itself. In those days, Sandanski was a village in Thrace.
Sandanski is great weather - Sandanski boasts the highest number of sunshine hours in all of Bulgaria. Tired of pollution? Enjoy what is probably the cleanest air in Europe, in the Bistritsa River valley around Sandanski. Many with respiratory diseases enjoy the often immediate absence of usual irritations known in their normal surroundings - this is pure air!
At the city center you find what most people seek - outdoor cafes and restaurants, hotels, clothes and art shops, goldsmiths and a few Internet cafes. And several ateliers. Want to have a new dress or suit tailor made during your stay, at discount prices? Find the tailor just meters off the Macedonia Avenue.
Macedonia Avenue is the main street through Sandanski, from the town square to the city park. It is the main shopping street, and you find most of the towns' art galleries here. Enjoy an easy stroll down Macedonia Avenue through the center of town under the full green leafy overhang, and do some serious shopping.
The town park stretches up along the Bistritsa river from the upper end of the Macedonia Avenue, with the Rila mountains towering majestically in the background.
As much of Sandanski, the charming town church clings to the valley side of the Bistritsa River valley.
Fortunately for tourists, Sandanski is also the location of the only four-star hotel in the region, the Hotel Sandanski, which offers you wellness treatments, massages and even a hot spring led into a swimmingpool for your health and enjoyment. What a way to enjoy life!
When visiting Sandanski, take the opportunity to visit the attractions in the greater Sandanski area - Melnik with its famous sandstone pyramids, traditional houses and delicious red wine, The Rupite volcanic crater with its hot thermal springs, the impressive Rila Monastery, and the wild and beautiful Rila Mountains.
